George Harrison Exhibition at GRAMMY Museum
21 October 2011
George Harrison: Living In The Material World – The Exhibition opened at the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles on October 11, and runs through February 12, 2012. As The Los Angeles Times reported, the exhibition “offers an unusually intimate look into the public and private lives of one of the most intensely public and private people in pop music history.”
At a party celebrating the launch, Olivia Harrison was joined by Ringo Starr, Jeff Lynne, Jim Keltner, Gary Wright and many others, who enjoyed the artifacts on display and the interactive stations within the exhibit.
On display are many of George’s guitars, including his 1957 Gretsch Duo Jet, his 1963 Rickenbacker 12-string, and the 1961 Fender Stratocaster known as “Rocky”. In addition to the guitars themselves is a new groundbreaking interactive app showing each guitar on display with the guitar’s history, facts and playlists including a 360-degree interactive view of each instrument.
Additionally, many other priceless artifacts are available to view up close and in person. Handwritten lyrics include “Here Comes The Sun,” “Living In The Material World,” “Taxman,” “Something” and more. Outfits include the jacket worn in the Traveling Wilburys video of “Handle With Care,” the Indian Kurta worn in the “Magical Mystery Tour” film to the black leather jacket George wore in the early days in Hamburg. Postcards, sketch books and diaries covering his early years in school, his days of Beatlemania, and even the Wilburys recording sessions round out a magnificent exhibition.
